Effective January 1, 1999, Kraus-Maffei Defence Technologies and Wegmann & Co.GmbH, two of Germany´s leading defence industry companies in armoured tracked and wheeled land systems, have merged. The new company Krauss-Maffei sites in Munich and Kassel. The company with its 2,300 employees worldwide is expected to have a turnover of approximately 1.4 billion German Marks in 1999.
By merging complementary products and competences, Kraus-Maffei Wegmann forms the leading European system company in the area of tracked and wheeled armoured vehicles. Worldwide, the future requirements in the field of light and heavy armoured vehicles of the branches artillery, main battle tanks, air defence, wheeled vehicles and engineering equipment are being conceptionally dealt with and realised by KMW. The company offers a full product range from heavy main battle tanks to light armoured wheeled vehicles. In all currently running large-scale vehicle programmes of the German Army, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann is the system leader.
For the customer, many advantages arise from the merger. As prime contractor and systems engineering company, KMW is responsible for the development and series production of complex weapon systems. Its key products, the PzH 2000 selfpropelled howitzer, the Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 MBTs as well as the Gepard and CA 1 self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, the light air defence system LeFlaSys, the reconnaissance vehicle FENNEK and the European production version of MLRS, all hold top positions by international standards.
Nearly 8,000 Leopard 1 and 2 main battle tanks have been fielded by 16 nations on three continents, including 10 NATO nations as well as Australia, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Sweden and Switzerland. The Leopard 2 is meanwhile referred to as the Euro Leopard 2.
The PzH 2000, the world´s most modern artillery system, provides all the required future performance in this branch. It is now in production and has been in service with the German Army since mid-1998. KMW is also involved in the MRLS programme, producing the cages for all European launchers as well as integrating and delivering the German MLRS systems.
In the wheeled armoured vehicle market, KMW is also a leading European supplier that presents a full scope of products from 4x4 to 8x8 vehicles weighing from six to 30 tons. As 4x4 vehicles, KMW offers the five-ton All-protected Carrier Vehicle (APCV), a multi-purpose, mine-protected transport car and the 10-ton FENNEK reconnaissance vehicle. The newest member of the KMW 4x4 vehicle family is the TERRIER, ajoint product from KMW and IVECO of Italy. This vehicle for civilian and military use with sophisticated light armoured technology with protection against AP mines and hand-held weapons is ready to be fielded.
The European Multi-role Armoured Vehicle GTK/MRAV/PWV is being dveloped in 6x6 and 8x8 versions at a weight class of up to 30 tons. This vehicle family is equipped with a state-of-the-art protection level and is of muodular construction which faciliates the adaption to different missions requirements.
Combat support and engineer equipment, such as a folding roadway system and the LEGUAN bridgelaying system are also being delivered to various customers.
Krauss-Maffei Wegmann has proven itself capable of international cooperation in all these large-scale programmes. The defednce industries of other countries are integrated into the development and production processes by individually harmonized cooperation programmes.
Further worldwide fields of activity are upgrading, modification and maintenance of armoured combat vehicles as well as the development and manufacture of testing and training equipment. In this area, training simulators for the weapon systems listed above and for civilian applications such as locomotives and trucks play an important role within Kraus-Maffei Wegmann.
In the area of tracked vehicles, the decoupled running gear, a revolutionary technology that reduces the level of noise and vibration inside the vehicle to the much lower level of wheeled vehicles, has been developed. Moreover, new technologies for manufachturing vehicle structures and protection concepts have been realised.
The protection technology ranging from heavy armour for combat vehicles to non-metallic materials for lightweight vehicles has become a major field of activity. A good example for this is the add-on armour for truck drivers´ cabins for protections against artillery fragments, direct fire and AP mines.
The Gesellschaft für logistischen Service mbH (GLS) - a 100% subsidiary of KMW, situated in Munich - guarantees for an all-inclusive and user-specific spare parts supply and logistic support for the weapon systems of KMW and other manufacturers. Furthermore, GLS offers modernization programmes for armoured tracked vehicles.
